The Spice Wars Nutmeg: Vintage Botanical Recipe Notebook
Look at that crimson net gripping the dark seed. That is mace, the blood-red aril suffocating the nutmeg itself, nestled inside the splitting yellow fruit of Myristica fragrans. Most people think of nutmeg as a dusty brown powder banished to the back of a cupboard, resurrected only for stale holiday eggnog. Nonsense. This is a spice forged in blood, colonial monopoly, and oceanic obsession.
The botanical illustration on this cover captures the plant exactly as the early European explorers finally saw it in the Banda Islands. They fought brutal wars over this evergreen tree. The British essentially traded Manhattan to the Dutch just to keep a toehold on a single nutmeg-producing rock in the Pacific. I track these vicious botanical land-grabs extensively in my notebook "Botanist" (https://notebooklm.google.com/notebook/99f1e23a-1ae5-4c36-b1fb-a897422451eb).
You don't put mediocre recipes in a binder like this. You use it for the heavy hitters. Rich venison stews, sharp pickling liquids, and elaborate medieval meat pies. Back then, a physician at the famed School of Salerno would warn you about nutmeg: one nut is good for you, a second will harm you, a third will kill you. The myristicin in the seed is literally hallucinogenic in high doses. A pinch cures indigestion, but a handful sends you into a stupor.
The cover shows the true anatomy. The stiff, entire leaves. The fleshy, pear-shaped drupe cracking open. The aggressive beauty of a plant that reshaped the global economy. Throw out your sanitized, pastel floral notebooks. Real cooking demands a vessel that respects the raw, sometimes toxic, and completely intoxicating reality of the plant kingdom. Don't grate the whole seed into your soup.

Although the product is what I expected (it's a notebook), the packaging for delivery was done poorly, and the notebook arrived bent, enough so that I am not comfortable giving it as the gift it was intended to be. The quality of the picture and design is lovely, but again, because it arrived bent, it is rather skewed.

This journal came in within a week of ordering it and I was thrilled! I love roses so I love having this journal. The size is perfect. Small enough to throw in a bag. The printing is clear. The pages are nice and thick. The binding is sturdy. The printing is a little darker than the photo on screen but that is expected with printing. It looks luxurious to me. I love deep red roses.
