This is a reproduction of the majestic image of the Sombrero Galaxy by the Hubble Space Telescope. Captured is the white, bulbous core of the galaxy encircled by thick dust lanes in the spiral arms seen edge on. The galaxy is at the southern edge of the Virgo cluster of galaxy and is a massive object equivalent to 800 billion solar masses. The galaxy is 50,000 light years across and 28 million lightyears from Earth. The image was released in October, 2003.
