This work is part of Fragonard’s figures de fantaisie series—quickly executed portraits of young women, often idealized and characterized by spontaneity and charm. X-ray analysis revealed that the girl originally faced the viewer, but Fragonard repainted her looking down at her book, emphasizing her absorption and the intimate moment. The Reader is housed in the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., acquired in 1961 through the generosity of Ailsa Mellon Bruce. It exemplifies the Rococo style’s emphasis on lightness, grace, and playful elegance, while also foreshadowing Impressionism through its vibrant brushwork and focus on fleeting moments of beauty.
