This image of the Prophet Elijah recalls eastern iconography and also medieval Carmelite spirituality who saw the prophet's vision of "A cloud as small as a man's hand [...] rising from the sea" as a foretelling of Our Lady. The Carmelite Order's traditions and symbolism are deeply bound up in the life of this Old Testament prophet, who is customarily seen as their legendary founder.
