The Portuguese Rooster of Barcelos is the unofficial symbol of Portugal and one of its most recognizable icons. Inspired by an old pilgrim’s legend, the clay figurines were first just a powerful symbol of truth and justice. From the 1950s onwards the Portuguese Barcelos Rooster became a symbol of national tourism propaganda efforts and Portuguese culture. The rooster is depicted in tourist posters to promote Portugal’s folklore, traditions, landscapes, and also the hospitality and simple way of life of the Portuguese. Today it remains a source of inspiration for many Portuguese artisans and graphic artists. I have eight senior dancers graduating from Fleet-Wood Dancentre this year, and I wanted to make them something special. Love this site, as there is such a selection that I was able to make eight unique dance totes for my dancers.....
