The Portuguese Rooster of Barcelos

The Portuguese Rooster of Barcelos is the unofficial symbol of Portugal and one of its most recognizable icons. Inspired by an old pilgrim’s legend, the clay figurines were first just a powerful symbol of truth and justice. From the 1950s onwards the Portuguese Barcelos Rooster became a symbol of national tourism propaganda efforts and Portuguese culture.
