The Nina Postcard
In 1492 the Nina, the Pinta and the Santa maria set sail under the leadership of Christopher Columbus. The Santa Maria was the larger of the three ships and used primarily to carry cargo. The Nina and the Pinta were Caravels, which were smaller and could go into shallower waters. The captain of the Nina was Vicente Yanez Pinzon. His brother captained the inta. In November of 1492, the Nina was blown off course by a strong wind, but rejoined the fleet in January of the following year. The Santa Maria later ran aground and was destroyed. It was on the Nina that Columbus sailed home to Spain in 1493. (Graphic circa 1850s.)
