The Iceberg Postcard

This is a reproduction of a late masterpiece by Frederic Edwin Church, “The Iceberg” of 1891. He was sixty-five years old when this was created and it was based on sketches that he had made in his expedition to the Arctic more than thirty years earlier. The painting is an oil on canvas that measures 20 inches by 30 inches. Church departed from his usual settings in this painting, going to the twilight of the day from his habitual noonday settings. He placed a single figure on the single ship which may refer to the artist himself as he contronted the eternal toward the end of his days. He died nine years years later. The painting is in the Carnegie Museum of Art, Pittsburg, Pennsylvania.
