The Great Dodecahedron Still Life Postcard

The Great Dodecahedron Still Life Postcard

The Great Dodecahedron Still Life Postcard ... My 2005 Acrylic Painting on canvas for my Summer Painting Class at Illinois Central College ... for our black and white still life painting project. I had to carry the still life parts each day until the painting was finished (or until our allotted time for it ran out) ... and reset it up each day. Inside a carrying box I put my (bulging pentagram) Star Box project from an earlier class with images of universe galaxies glued outside of it and inside that I put a book of Euclid's Elements (of Alexandria, Egypt) (in which the Golden or Phi Proportion Ratio Proportion is described) and a copy of a geometry proof or an infinite equation dealing with the Golden Ratio Proportion which I dreamt up myself. Next to this was a reproduction Ancient Egyptian Scarab beetle god Kehpri (Khepri Egyptian: ḫprj, also transliterated Khepera, Kheper, Khepra, Chepri) ... which simultaneously stood for royal messages written upon its underside, the rising new day morning Sun, life renewal, and spontaneous generation of life, given to me by Judge Erik I. Blanc from one of his several trips to Egypt ... next to this was a small wooden square shelf I found at a resale shop The Attic near my house. And on top of this is a 3D printed Great Dodecahedron geometric shape showing pentagon and pentagram star shapes ... a geometric shape closely associated in multiple ways with the Golden or Phi or Divine Ratio Proportion given to me as a gift from Mr. and Mrs. Richey who owned Tri City Machine in the Old WWII Rope Building on the river in Peoria. They were looking to be art patrons and were interested in helping me further my art career in 2004 / 2005 when I took art at Illinois Central College. They took our Colour and Design Class on a tour of their building in which they had a small art gallery and wished to house artist studios. They offered to introduce me to a teacher at the Chicago Art Institute. The Greater Dodecahedron is made up of an outer hull shape of an Icosahedron which has faces of intersecting pentagons ... but, each pentagon has indented areas (three triangles each) forming the raised pentagram stars raised to a point at centre of each pentagon ... the pentagons being intersected. The total number of triangles forming the entire geometric shape is 60. Each pentagon has 5 equilateral triangle areas raised at the centre of each pentagon each further divided into indented areas formed by three triangles ... so there are 15 triangles each pentagon. But, the pentagons are intersected. They gave this to me knowing of my interest in geometric shapes particularly dealing with the Phi Ratio. I remember they watched me draw my Grey Tone Markers Native American portrait in 4 hours. And they spoke to me after that. I had no idea who they were. My favourite parts of my painting are the square shelf and the greater dodecahedron. I was less happy with the Star Box but even that looks pretty good when you look at it from the left for some reason. When I view this painting from a moderate angle from the left it looks pretty good which seems weird because it faces leftward. I stare at it but cannot figure out why it looks better that way. The teacher loved everything about it except that I failed to finish the drapery leaving it too smokey ... unfinished looking. What I like best about this painting (besides the very interesting inter-related component stories) is the way I captured the play of light upon the square shelf. The Greater Dodecahedron shape was driving me crazy to paint it right.
