The Forty Martyrs of Sebaste Orthodox Icon Postcard
In the early 4th century, the emperor of the East, Licinius broke his agreement with the emperor of the West, Constantine, to legalize Christianity in his area. Licinius was afraid of treason among his troops so he decided to eliminate Christianity. He focused his attention on 40 soldiers in Sebaste (modern day Turkey) that he knew were devout Christians and fierce warriors. He tried to persuade them by flattery and then threats. The men refused. Licinius then had them tortured and martyred.
