Full title: The Eruption of Soufriere Mountains in the Island of St. Vincent April 30, 1812. Joseph Mallord William Turner, known as J.M.W. Turner, was an 18th century / 19th century British landscape painter of the 18th and 19th centuries known for his luminous, almost abstract quality paintings. He was known as the “Painter of Light,” as he created scenes of luminous imagery using brilliant colours. His works -- watercolors, oil paintings and engravings -- are now regarded as a predecessor to Impressionism.
