The Bootle Landmarks, around 1830 Postcard
The image here shows what were called the Bootle Landmarks. These were Cleopatra’s Needle type high pillars, and these acted as markers for shipping after they had entered (or were leaving) the estuary. The image is from a painting by Samuel Austin, in about 1830; but the pillars were around for another 50 years or so, sadly having to make way for the new Alexandra Dock.
