In 1739, these companies were brought together to form a regiment, which would later become known as the Black Watch due to the dark colour of their government-issued tartan kilts. The Black Watch is particularly renowned for its bravery and discipline in battle, and its soldiers earned the nickname "The Ladies from Hell" from their enemies during the Peninsular War.
