The Battle of the Kearsarge and the Alabama Postcard
The Battle of the Kearsarge and the Alabama by Edouard Manet/Oil on canvas/1864 – This battle has a place in history; it is a part of the American Civil War. As in this print the original work is Manet’s creative depiction of the Battle of Cherbourg between the Kearsarge and the Alabama on June 19, 1864. The naval battle was fought off the coast of France near Cherbourg. Manet did not witness the battle between these two American ships, the Kearsarge and the Alabama but on hearing the news he quickly did his depiction and hung the painting in the window of a print shop in Paris. This work is Manet’s first known seascape.
