The Battle of the Amazons (c. 1618) is a dynamic oil on wood painting depicting the mythological amazonomachy, a fierce battle between the ancient Greek warriors led by Theseus and the all-female Amazon warriors. The composition is a whirlwind of movement and violence centred on a narrow bridge, with horses, riders, and combatants in dramatic poses, capturing intense action and emotional turmoil. The work reflects Rubens’s admiration for Leonardo da Vinci’s Battle of Anghiari and is housed in the Alte Pinakothek, Munich.
