The Battle of Kawanakajima Poster

The Battle of Kawanakajima by Chikanobu (1838 - 1912).Terrific kabuki triptych depicting a duel between Uesugi Kenshin and Takeda Shingen during the Battle of Kawanakajima. At left, Kenshin gallops into the enemy camp on a brown horse, gripping his sword above his head during the surprise attack. Seated within the tent walls of his encampment, Shingen deftly thrusts out his iron battle fan to deflect the blow. Shingen wears a magnificent battle helmet topped with a horned demon and flowing white wig, the hair delicately embossed. Above, two of Shingen's retainers have leapt to their feet to come to their master's aid, wielding pole arms against the attackers. Clouds of smoke separate the figures from a line of banners and standards of the approaching troops. A dramatic scene with large expressive figures and vibrant color.
