The Aachen Cathedral Postcard

The Aachen Cathedral Postcard

Aachen Cathedral, also known as the Cathedral of Aix-la-Chapelle, is a masterpiece of Carolingian architecture and a symbol of European history. Commissioned by Charlemagne, the King of the Franks and later the first Holy Roman Emperor, in the late 8th century, the cathedral was completed around 800 AD. It became the coronation site for German kings for several centuries, and Charlemagne himself was buried there upon his death in 814. The cathedral's octagonal Palatine Chapel, with its stunning golden mosaic dome and intricate Carolingian architecture, remains one of the most important examples of early medieval architecture in Europe. Over the centuries, Aachen Cathedral underwent various modifications and additions, reflecting changes in artistic styles and the evolving political landscape. The cathedral's treasury houses a significant collection of medieval artifacts, including the Cross of Lothair, a jewelled processional cross dating back to the 10th century. The shrine of Charlemagne, believed to contain his remains, has been a focal point for pilgrims and visitors. Aachen Cathedral was the first German site to be designated as a World Heritage Site in 1978, recognizing its historical and cultural significance. The cathedral continues to attract visitors from around the world, drawn by its architectural grandeur, historical importance, and the legacy of Charlemagne in shaping European civilization.
