Chimfunshi Wildlife Orphanage is a world-renowned chimpanzee sanctuary located in the Copperbelt Province of Zambia, near the Kafue River. Founded in 1983 as a rescue centre for a single injured chimpanzee, it has grown into one of the largest and oldest chimpanzee sanctuaries in the world. Chimfunshi provides a safe, expansive habitat for hundreds of chimpanzees, many of which were rescued from the bushmeat trade, circuses, or illegal pet ownership. The facility focuses on rehabilitation, long-term care, and conservation education, ensuring these primates can live in large, natural social groups within secure enclosures.
