Temperantia by Sir Edward Coley Burne-Jones Tile
Temperantia (Temperance) (1872) by Sir Edward Coley Burne-Jones (1833-1898) is a vintage Victorian Pre-Raphaelite fine art portrait painting. A beautiful woman is pouring water from a jug to put out the flames of a fire at her feet. Temperantia is an ancient Roman goddess who embodies the concept of temperance and moderation. It is one of the last paintings Burne Jones created using this lady, his model and mistress Maria Zambaco.
About the artist:
Sir Edward Coley Burne-Jones, 1st Baronet (1833-1898) was an English artist and designer closely associated with the later phase of the Preraphaelite movement.
