Hugh Capet was King of the Franks from 987 to 996. He was the founder of the Capet dynasty, who ruled France until 1328, when the dynasty died out and was replaced by the House of Valois.
France itself was a highly fragmented region at the time, and Hugh's power was severely limited as a result. However he made Paris his centre of power, and from there his descendants would begin to push for greater control of the country.
