Eleanor of Aquitaine is one of the best known women in medieval European history. She was both Queen of France through her first husband, and then after they split she married Henry of Anjou and ultimately became Queen of England. She and Henry had multiple children together, but their family was not the happiest. After Henry's death she helped her son Richard come to the throne, and then ransomed him when he was captured returning from Crusade. On Richard's death she then supported her son John to become King. She died in Fontevraud Abbey in France, where her tomb effigy can still be seen.
