King Charles IV of France was the last king in the Capetian dynasty. His brothers Louis X and Philippe V had both died without legitimate male heirs. Despite marrying three times, Charles' only surviving children were all girls - who could not inherit the French throne.
Charles' nickname "the fair" comes from his good looks, rather than any sense of decent behaviour.
After Charles' death the House of Valois, who were descended from a younger son of King Philip III, claimed the throne. This led to the start of the Hundred Years War as the other main claimant was King Edward III of France, Charles' nephew through his sister Isabella.
