Tale of Genji by Ando,Hiroshige

Scene fifty four of Tale of Genji By Ando, Hiroshige. Genji monogatari 54 Japanese print showing scene from Murasaki Shikibu's Tale of Genji with elaborately dressed woman and man separated by a screen. Born in Edo, Japan, Hiroshiges family name was Tokitaro, but he adopted the name of his mentor as per the custom of the time. His first work was a sketch of a procession done at the age of ten, and earned him the title of a prodigy. In 1828, Hiroshige began his own studio, but eventually moved to Kyoto to produce landscapes. His prints became very popular and emulated upon his return to Edo.
