With the financial crisis of 2007/08, this term has entered common language. It is often referred to as a "tail event" or "tail risk" because its occurrence lies at the edge of a standard statistical distribution curve. As such, it is usually used to describe a negative event that derails the normal flow of things. The design on this product attempts to convey this threatening character, in a way that is not so much the "elephant in the room" but rather the "swan in the room".
