Synagogue Postcard
Concert hall (Converted synagogue), Szombathely (German: Steinamanger, Medieval/Classic Latin: Savaria) Szombathely is the centre of Vas county in Western Hungary, located near the Austrian border. The first synagogue of the city was built by the former lord of the city, Duke Batthyányi. The present-day synagogue was designed by the Austrian architect Ludwig Schöne in 1880. In 1941 the 3400 members of the Jewish community represented nearly 10% of the city's population. They were inducted into labour battalions from 1942 owards. Others were deported to Auswitz. After the end of the war about fifty Jews returned. Since 1975 the synagogue is used as the concert hall of Szombathely.
