About This Design

Swallowtail butterfly tile

This design was created with reference to the "Ageha-cho crest pattern diagram and training text" found in "Kyoto Kamon Uwa-e-shi" in "Nihon Monsho Dai-zukan" (March 28, 2013). "Fushi-cho" refers to a state where the wings are held horizontally, whereas "Ageha-cho" refers to a state where the wings are raised. The "Ageha-cho" that appears in family crests is not the same as the typical swallowtail butterfly. It was surprising to learn that the "Ageha-cho" in the design is different from the biological swallowtail butterfly. It was also surprising to discover that the name of the design is distinguished by whether the wings are raised or lowered. (From "Exploring Family Crests" by Keiichi Morimoto)
