San Francisco’s most beautiful bad idea once clung to the edge of the continent. A ghost of glass and saltwater, this temple to leisure and spectacle doomed by the math. It was grand, it was impractical, and the city loved it anyway. That is, until upkeep costs drowned the dream. By the time it burned down in ’66, it was already a husk, picked apart by vandals and neglect. Today, influencers scramble over the bones, mistaking ruins for romance, chasing nostalgia for something they never knew while the Pacific laughs and takes back what’s hers.
