Surrender at Appomattox Postcard
On April 9, 1865 Confederate forces under Robert E. Lee desired to break Union forces blocking his effort to break through towards Southern troops in North Carolina. When Lee realized that Union Cavalry was backed up by Infantry, he knew that his only choice was to surrendered which was accomplished that afternoon in the McLean House. This painting is a wonderfully historically accurate rendition of a part of that process. This painting is by Tom Lovell who died in 1997 at the age of eighty-six years. He was twice winner of the Prix de West, a member of the Illustrators Hall of Fame, and a Lifetime Achievement award by the National Academy of Western Art and the National Cowboy Hall of Fame.
