Constructed in 1791 at the directive of George Washington, the Portland Head Lighthouse in Cape Elizabeth is the oldest lighthouse in the state of Maine and one of the oldest in the United States. Its spectacular location on rocky cliffs at the entrance to Portland Harbour makes it one of the most picturesque lighthouses in the world, particularly at sunrise and sunset.
