Sunset at Petit Manan Light Maine Postcard

This postcard features the Petit Manan Light in Maine. The Petit Manan Light is a lighthouse on Petit Manan Island in Maine. The island is at the end of a series of ledges extending out from Petit Manan Point, between Dyer Bay and Pigeon Hill Bay, that projects into the Gulf of Maine. Originally, it was a small stone lighthouse in 1817. The present structure was built in 1855 and the lightkeeper's house was built in 1875. Since it is in an exposed position, there has been damage to it over the years. In 1887, in an effort to stabilize it, iron tie rods were installed. The light station is part of the Petit Manan Wildlife Refuge and is not open to the public but there are boat tours to the island. There is a colony of breeding puffins on the island.
