Sugar Loaf Rock, a limestone formation created when the waters of Lake Huron receded in the geological beginnings of Mackinac Island, rises 79 feet above the ground at its base. According to Native American mythology, Sugar Loaf was the wigwam of the Great Spirit, Manabozho. Another legend refers to swarms of bees that once inhabited the rock and filled every nook and crannies with sweet honey.
