A hundred or so years ago, general stores were the place to get almost everything you needed. They didn't have stores like we had today, in those days you had to ask what you wanted. They were quite well stocked, as long as you didn't need a lot of any one things. You could buy sewing supplies, food, medicine, smoking stuff, shoes, tools, they had a bit of everything. The general store was also a local hangout, people would just stand around and talk about stuff, its a place where you got the local gossip.
