Before there were online retailers and big box stores, there were general stores. This sort of establishment was a sort of one stop shop, and provided you only needed like one of those items, then you were in luck. It wasn't really the place to do a full days shopping.
But it was convenient, they had medicine, kitchen items, different spices and ingredients. Hardware, sewing machines, boots, even some vacuuming devices.
