The Phasmatodea, Phasmida or Phasmatoptera are an order of insects popularly known as, the Stick Insects, Stick Bugs, Leaf Insects, Bug Sticks, Ghost Insects and Phasmids. The name is derived from the ancient Greek "phasma", meaning apparition or phantom. These insects are the big daddies in the art of camouflage. Some species have holes and bite marks in their thorax to resemble decaying leaves. To spectacular range of morphologies of this group of insects is rich and varied. The Phasmids are hemimetabolous, they have a life cycle of 3 stages: egg nymph adult If a predator manages to spot a phasmid they can respond with startling displays, defend themselves with toxic secretions or spines or for the lucky ones who have wings, simply fly away.
