The challenge of painting at night fascinated van Gogh and in painting Starry Night Over the Rhône he chose a vantage point that allowed him to seize the reflections of the gas lighting in Arles across the shimmering blue water of the Rhône. In the forefront, two lovers stroll along the banks of the river. The paint captured the very essence of true romance.
