Star Map 2D – Neigbourhood of Sol (with glare) Poster

Do you know what our neighbourhood of the Milky Way looks like? Can you name at least 5 stars that are very close to us? Do you know if any of them have potentially habitable planets? No? You're not alone. Orientation in 3D space is hard and counter-intuitive. And useful 2D maps of space are very hard to impossible to make. In this unique project, our star neighbourhood is visualized in 2D thanks to an advanced algorithm called the Kohonen network. It took 5 months to arrive at something that is useful, and another few weeks to tweak it to the current state. This version has circles of 'glare' around each star for a more artistic (but still readable) effect.
