Detail from the "Life of Christ" window at Chartres Cathedral. An angel appears to Joseph in a dream. From a 19th Century chromolithograph. In the New Testament, Joseph has three dreams. In Matthew 1:20-21 an Angel tells Joseph is told not be afraid to take Mary as his wife. In the second dream, (Matthew 2:13) Joseph is warned to leave Bethlehem and flee to Egypt. In the third dream (Matthew 2:19-20) Joseph is told that it is safe to return to Nazareth from Egypt.
