Our St. George’s Shield is based on the English Flag of St. George (q.v.). It is blazoned with a red cross on a white field. The symbol is an old one. In the Middle Ages, representations of Saint George as a crusader knight depicted him bearing such shields with red-on-white crosses. + Red roses are a traditional gift on St. George's Day (April 23). + Image Credits (St. George's Shield): Saints_Aplenty; (Red roses): Extracted from an antique postcard, Birthday Greetings, Series 40, printed in Germany, early 20th-century, c. 1910.
