St. Andrew's Flag, Saltire, or Flag of Scotland Tile

Among his many patronages, St. Andrew is the national patron of Scotland. According to tradition, St. Andrew was martyred by being tied to a large, wooden x-shaped cross or saltire until he died of dehydration and starvation c. 70. Our St. Andrew’s Shield is based on that instrument of martyrdom as depicted on the Scottish Flag. In the language of heraldry, the Scottish flag is blazoned blue (azure) with a silver (argent; usually rendered white) x-shaped cross (or saltire).
