St. Ambrose of Optina was a 19th century Russian monk. He battled illnesses all of his life and, at one point, it became so bad that he was forced into semi-reclusion where he mastered the Jesus Prayer and the silence of the soul before God. Despite his struggles, he saw every person who sought his counsel. He also assumed the position of principal in the monastery when the previous monk passed. He founded a convent close to his monastery and welcomed the poor, sick and even the blind. He made it possible for any woman to become a nun.
