Alexander Yaroslavich Nevsky was a 13th century Prince of Novgorod, Grand Prince of Kiev and Grand Prince of Vladimir. Commonly regarded as a key figure in medieval Russian history, he rose to legendary status on account of his military victories as well as against German crusaders. He preserved Eastern Orthodoxy amidst all the chaos and was canonized a saint in the Russian Orthodox Church in 1547.
