And it gets worse… In yet another horrifying glimpse of what unchecked federal power looks like, a 38-year-old Portland mother and musician has been violently arrested, held without bail, and taken across state lines — all for the “crime” of playing her clarinet at a peaceful protest outside an ICE facility. The woman, a member of the Unpresidented Brass Band — a “social action-oriented, horn-driven marching band” whose mission is literally to de-escalate protest tensions — was performing the “Ghostbusters” theme when federal agents suddenly stormed the crowd. According to eyewitnesses, ICE agents tackled the woman to the ground, dragging her face-first into the mud while her clarinet clattered to the pavement. Video shows three armed agents piling on top of the unarmed musician as bystanders screamed in disbelief. Her husband says the joyous, musical atmosphere instantly turned into chaos: “It was a beautiful party atmosphere. Everybody’s really excited. Then the band hits into ‘Ghostbusters,’ and then at ‘Ghostbusters,’ that’s when ICE start storming in. Why are they targeting a clarinet player? A clarinet player standing on the sidewalk, following instructions.” The clarinet-playing woman’s husband wasn’t told where she was for hours. He finally got a call at 2 a.m. — from across state lines. His wife, whose name is being withheld for her protection, had been secretly transferred from Portland, Oregon, to Clark County Jail in Vancouver, Washington, with no listed charges and no bail. Meanwhile, their 3-year-old child kept asking when mommy will come home. Let that sink in: a young mother, a clarinet player, a peaceful protester — disappeared by ICE. And this isn’t an isolated incident. Across the country, federal agents have been repeatedly caught violating court orders, assaulting protesters, and tear-gassing civilians. Just this week in Chicago, agents ignored a judge’s restraining order banning tear gas — gassing civilians and local police officers in the process. The Portland Mutual Aid Network is called for the woman’s immediate release, declaring: “Protesting for immigrants is not a crime.” She was eventually released the next day after her arraignment in Federal Court. After her court appearance, the woman expressed her gratitude to be reunited with her family while acknowledging that she faces a legal battle over the months ahead. Nonetheless, she says that the experience “has only strengthened my commitment to social justice…and I hope that people continue to speak out against acts of violence towards minorities.” Unfortunately, to ICE, music is rebellion and compassion is the enemy. This is the America MAGA extremists are building — one where federal stormtroopers can kidnap a woman for playing “Ghostbusters” on a clarinet and call it law and order.
