When you can't get to Mass, you can make an Act of Spiritual Communion! St. Thomas Aquinas defined Spiritual Communion as "an ardent desire to receive Jesus in the Holy Sacrament and a loving embrace as though we had already received Him." This practice is well established in the Catholic Church where it has been highly recommended by many saints, according to St. John Paul II. Spiritual Communion continues to be practiced in some of the the Protestant religions, such as the Lutheran, Anglican Communion, and Methodist churches. The prayer has been especially useful to Christians in times of persecution, such as the abolition of religion under Lenin during the Cold War, and in times of plagues such as the COVID-19 pandemic.
