Castelo dos Mouros, Sintra, Portugal The Castle of the Moors is located on a high peak overlooking the town of Sintra. It was built in the 9th century by the Moors to protect the rich lowlands. The fall of Lisbon caused the surrender of the garrison in 1147. It lost its military value during the 15-16th century and it was abandoned. The ruins were reconstructed in the early 19th century.
