On November 25, 1970, Japanese author Yukio Mishima and a handful of young men enlisted in his spiritual army -- the Tatenokai of "Shield Society" -- visited a JSDF military base and took its commander hostage. They did this armed only with swords. Mishima gave a speech to gathered soldiers. Then , in an act anticipated in his work and planned for years, Mishima performed hara-kiri and was beheaded by a member of the Tatenokai. His suicide captivated the world, and served as the transcendent culmination of his personal philosophy and aesthetic. In short, he really meant what he said and he cut his own stomach open to prove it. Hence, SINCERITY.
