It can be found in rivers, lakes and reservoirs, preferring fast-flowing waters of rapids and races and usually forming aggregations near the surface. It feeds on aquatic insects, mollusks, earthworms and plants. It can reach a maximum length of 40 cm (15.7 in) and a maximum published weight of 1.5 kg (3.3 lb).
