The Sagarifuji crest was given to Nakatomi no Kamatari, a collaborator of Emperor Tenji, as a reward during the Taika Reforms (645 AD). Although 'Fuji' is the representative crest, it wasn't used until the late Heian period. It's a misconception to consider the Fujimaru crest as the representative family crest of the Fujiwara clan, as it's based on a common misconception (from 'Nihon Monshogaku').
