The "tree of Guernica" or "Gernikako Arbola" is an oak tree that symbolizes traditional freedoms for the Basque people. The Lords of Biscay (including kings of Castile) swore to respect Basque liberties under it, and the modern Lehendakari (president) of the Basque Country swears his charge there.
