Shell Island (Fadiouth) Senegal Postcard

Fadiouth is an extraordinary island village located on the Petite Côte of Senegal, famously built entirely on a foundation of millions of mollusk shells. Connected to the mainland town of Joal by a long, narrow wooden bridge, the island offers a unique landscape where the streets are paved with sun-bleached white shells that crunch underfoot. It is widely celebrated for its profound religious tolerance, evidenced by its shared cemetery where Christians and Muslims are buried side-by-side on a shell-covered hill overlooking the mangroves.
