St. Patrick, whose feast day is celebrated on March 17th (the day of his death), was known to use it to symbolize the Holy Trinity. St. Patrick was a 5th century Christian bishop and missionary in Ireland and is recognized as its patron saint along with St. Brigit and St. Columba.
